Today is Juneteenth, a holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.
So what better opportunity to share the words of Brittney Cooper, who describes herself as a “writer, feminist, Southerner.”
Cooper’s work, at Rutgers University, brings together civil and women’s rights. Against the backdrop of the ongoing struggles for equity, her words are an encouragement to not give up, and to keep showing up.
“We teach, we work, we love, we read, we dance…,” she tells us. “These folks want to deny our humanity … so every time we continue to do those things…we say that this is the world that we want and we continue to fight for it.”
Happy Juneteenth!
