Are you a gig worker? Listen up – the way you earn money could soon change.
Last Friday, after weeks of negotiations, the world’s government agreed at the International Labour Organization that a ‘gig worker’ could be defined as an employed person.
This is pretty huge. Companies have long claimed the people who use their platforms for work – delivering pizzas or driving taxis – are self-employed, leaving these workers with few protections.
For women, who face lower pay, unsafe conditions and sexual harassment, this shift could be a game-changer.
We won’t know exactly what governments will commit to until next year but the conversations are a good sign. Reporter Louise Donovan digs into the details
