This week, abortion was decriminalised in England and Wales.
The procedure is widely available but under an old Victorian-era law, it was also still – technically – a crime. This landmark decision will change that – and ensure no person can be criminally prosecuted for ending a pregnancy.
But did you know similar laws are still on the books in other European countries? In Germany and the Netherlands, you can still fall foul of the law for terminating a pregnancy despite the progressive abortion care on offer – especially in the latter.
These old laws matter because as backlash against reproductive rights grows globally, campaigners fear that they could be dusted off and used to criminalise more people.
